Throughout its history, remarkable Coast Guardsmen have demonstrated courage, leadership, and selfless service, inspiring generations who proudly wear the Coast Guard uniform. 1790: Alexander Hamilton and the Revenue Marine
The first US Coast Guard legend is noted as the creator of the USCG. In August 4, 1790, Alexander Hamilton, was established as the first Secretary of the Treasury, established the Revenue Marine, later known as the Revenue Cutter Service. At a time when the young United States lacked a formal Navy, revenue cutters enforced customs laws, prevented smuggling, and protected American commerce.
Hamilton’s vision laid the foundation for what would eventually become today’s U.S. Coast Guard, establishing a tradition of maritime service that continues more than 230 years later.
1861–1865: Captain John Faunce
During the Civil War era, Captain John Faunce distinguished himself through exceptional leadership in the Revenue Cutter Service. Faunce helped protect American waterways and supported federal operations during one of the nation’s most challenging periods. His professionalism and dedication helped strengthen the reputation of America’s maritime guardians.
1942: Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro
Perhaps no US Coast Guard legend is more revered than Signalman First Class Douglas Albert Munro, the only Coast Guardsman ever awarded the Medal of Honor.
During the Battle of Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942, Munro used his landing craft to shield a group of U.S. Marines from intense enemy fire while helping evacuate them to safety. Although he was mortally wounded during the mission, his heroic actions saved hundreds of Marines.
Douglas Munro’s extraordinary courage continues to inspire every generation of Coast Guardsmen and remains a defining chapter in Coast Guard history.
1950s–Present: Admiral James M. Loy
Admiral James M. Loy became one of the Coast Guard’s most influential leaders during the modern era. Serving as the 21st Commandant of the Coast Guard, Loy helped modernize operations while strengthening maritime security and interagency cooperation.
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, his leadership played a critical role in expanding the Coast Guard’s homeland security mission while maintaining its traditional responsibilities of search and rescue, maritime safety, and environmental protection.
